News From The Whipping Post
2005 had a chaotic start for The Warbabies. We were originally scheduled to play at Swamp Mama's on 3rd Street downtown for New Year's Eve, but the club was suddenly sold and all band dates there were summarily cancelled. For anyone who responded to the Swamp Mama's web page and initial advertising and showed up at Swamp Mama's on New Year's Eve to see us, we offer our must profound and humble apologies. All we can say is that the confusion was beyond our control.
Thanks to the graciousness of the ownership and staff of Mr. G's at the corner of Sharp and Florida Blvd. (in the shopping center where the old "New Generation" used to be), we did play on New Year's Eve. Despite the fact that there was no time for advertising, a nice crowd showed up and everyone enjoyed the evening.
We had a great time at the Spanish Town Mardi Gras Ball on January 15th at the Centroplex. We'd like to thank Bill "Hollywood" Bennett for his usual professionalism in helping the band sound right on the big stage. We'd also like to thank the members of The Subdudes, who headlined the event. We've never met a nicer group of guys, and their cooperation with us made the night go smoothly. The Subdudes are a truly original band, and we certainly enjoyed their show when we were done. We saw lots of familiar faces there, and Terry Burhans even flew in from San Diego to play a few songs with us. King C.C. Lockwood took our picture, but I don't think you'll be seeing it in any bank lobbies.
Thanks, Tommy Comeaux, for writing such a fine piece on us for the February edition of Rhythm City Magazine. It seems like we got so carried away talking about The Acadian Club that we didn't say much about ourselves. Maybe that's for the best.
We had a great time at Phil Brady's on March 4. We'll be back there in May. Thanks to everyone who came out to see us.
The band has been contacted by Merel Bregante of Little Bears Records--an independent label based in Austin, TX. Merel was once the drummer for the Loggins and Messina Band, and he met Courtney and Skip when Casey Kelly was touring with Loggins and Messina in the 1970s. Merel made some test recordings of The Warbabies in early May at Johnny P.'s Main Street Studio. The recording went well, and the band is working on material for a possible album. We'll keep you posted on the progess of this project, and we hope to be "testing" a few songs we're thinking of recording at our live shows soon.
