Evans Byrd was my lifelong friend, first dive buddy, and the most intrepid diver and spearfisherman I've ever known. This image is from the mid-1970's when we were the scourge of the Gulf of Mexico. His "damn the torpedoes" attitude caught up with him on March 4, 1982--two days shy of his 29th birthday. I still feel his presence whenever I dive beneath an oil rig, and the thought "If Evans could see me now" pops into my head whenever my life reaches a dramatic moment.
