The wetland habitat as seen on this page was effectively destroyed in late spring of 2009. In April of that year, Mitch Ourso, the Iberville Parish President, ordered an antiquated and inefficient lock to be permanently opened due to pressure from land developers headed by Scott Nesbit. As a result, Alligator Bayou has been effectively drained. "Experts" speaking on behalf of Nesbit claim a need to restore the bayou to its original state--a task that would require turning back the clock nearly 5,000 years to the time when the Mississippi River took its present course. The photos at right were taken on May 20, 2009, and they speak for themselves. The once living, verdant bayou has been reduced to a stagnant ditch meandering through cracked mud. You'll notice a conspicuous lack of wildlife in these photos.
