Mantis shrimp are colorful and unusual finds. Although they can be quite large (up to 6 inches long), they are usually at least partially concealed within their burrows. They can be aggressive if molested, and they are capable of inflicting painful gashes with their powerful claws--a nasty behavior that has earned them the moniker "thumb splitter" by many Caribbean fishermen.
