Nutria families like this mama and three babies are common at Cypress Flats. Nutria are large aquatic rodents native to South America that were introduced in Louisiana in the 1930s as a fur bearer. They have displaced the indigenous muskrat population and have become such an ecological problem that the state now offers a bounty on nutria tails to licensed trappers.
